Michigan State Meet

Dudek Runs 17 Flat, Leads Ann Arbor Pioneer To Girls D1 Title

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Running in windy conditions at Michigan Speedway on Saturday, Zofia Dudek ran 17:00.4 for 5,000 meters and became the third-fastest girl ever at the Michigan state cross country championships.

Only Olivia Theis (16:52.1) and Megan Goethals (16:54.8) have run faster.

Dudek, who also competes internationally for Poland, also led Ann Arbor Pioneer to the Division 1 state title. The team averaged 18:26 for its scoring five and scored 83 points. Traverse City Central was second with 113 points.

Nike Elite Camper Carter Solomon of Plymouth continued his perfect ledger this fall, winning the state title in 15:01.2. It was his 13th win of the season.

Solomon had to work for it. Brendan Favazza from Clarkston was second in 15:06.0.

Brighton scored 137 points to defeat Dexter (155), Clarkston (190) and Saline (192) for the team championship.

Evan Bishop of East Grand Rapids, nearly equal to Solomon all season, ran 15:12.6 to claim the Division 2 individual title after placing second last year. Twins Anthony and Michael Hancock of Dearborn Divine Child finished second and third.

Fremont put two in the top eight and was an easy winner with 68 points.

In the Division 2 girls race, East Grand Rapids put all five scorers in the top 14 and scored 32 points. Senior Anna Petr ran 17:59.6 for the win and little sister Abigail Petr, a freshman, ran 18:52 for 14th place.

Hart scored 77 points to win the Division 3 girls team title. Rylee Tolson from Stockbridge was the individual winner in 18:31.4.

Hunter Jones from Benzie Central took the boys race in 15:45 and had a winning margin of nearly 30 seconds. The Hanover-Horton boys won with 146 points.

Sophomore Abby VanderKooi from Muskegon Western Michigan Christian won her second straight Division 4 girls final, clocking in at 18:11. She won by more than 70 seconds.

Bridgman won a tight team race with 132 points.
